The first man in space was Yuri Gagarin from the former Soviet Union. On April 12, 1961, his tiny Vostok space capsule, only 2.3 metres across, made one orbit of the Earth. The spherical capsule then separated from its Equipment Module and rocket before plunging back into the Earth's atmosphere and landing by parachute.
