Actually land was bare and lifeless when life first began on earth more than two billion years ago. These were the first trees to reproduce by seeds.Pines and other conifers (cone-bearing trees) developed somewhat later, 300,000,000 years ago. This group includes in damp and shady places, many familiar trees such as pines, firs , spruces, cedars, hemlocks and redwoods. All these trees bear their seeds on cones.About 150,000,000 years ago, the first flowering plants developed. Their well-protected seeds gave them a great advantage over plants with more exposed seeds, and they increased in numbers and kinds Today these flowering plants are found everywhere.
