How plants grow in Soil

Actually there are many things in the soil that make the plants grow.Let's first know what exactly is the soil . Soil is a mixture of organic and inorganic materials. The organic part is the living things and the remains of once-living things. And the inorganic part is made up of non living things like rocks and minerals.Humus is the decaying organic matter in the soil. This humus separates otherwise tightly packed rock particles, thus allowing more water and air to enter the soil. Humus also provides food for bacteria and other micro-organisms in soil. Plants can use the dead organic matter. Humus is good for the fertility of the soil. There are many kinds of animals living in the soil. The body wastes of these animals enrich the soil. Earthworms turn over the soil and improve it. Microorganisms feed on particles of organic matter. This breaks the organic material into minerals, gases and liquids. These are good for plants.Moreover there are ten elements that all plants need to grow. Three of these, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon, are present in either air or water or in both. The others are obtained from the soil by the plants. They are : nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, iron and sulfur. All these help the plants grow.

When did plants appear on earth :

Actually  land was bare and lifeless when life first began on earth more than two billion years ago. The only plant life was in the sea.Then, about 425,000,000 years ago a few small green plants appeared on land. They may have developed from certain kinds of green sea weeds. The first land plants looked very much like the mosses,liverworts and hornworts you see growing More complicated plants existed about 400,000,000 years ago. These resembled modern ferns, horsetails and club mosses. Ferns were the first plants to have roots, stems and leaves.By the time the first dinosaur walked the earth, vast forests of seed ferns, ginkgoes, cycads and cordaitales stretched across the land. These were the first trees to reproduce by seeds.Pines and other conifers (cone-bearing trees) developed somewhat later, 300,000,000 years ago. This group includes in damp and shady places, many familiar trees such as pines, firs , spruces, cedars, hemlocks and redwoods. All these trees bear their seeds on cones.About 150,000,000 years ago, the first flowering plants developed. Their well-protected seeds gave them a great advantage over plants with more exposed seeds, and they increased in numbers and kinds Today these flowering plants are found everywhere.
